i accidentally went on a 28.5 kilometer bike ride today. yes, my cyclometer came set to kilometers and i haven't bothered to read the instructions to learn how to change it. it feels like an even larger accomplishment in kilometers as opposed to mere miles. although, 17.9 miles sounds plenty far enough. i went north out of the neighborhood and around the lake a few times. it was such a gorgeous day, i thought why not see where the southern route goes. so i passed the airport and headed downstream.
apparently, you can go a very long ways. also, sunscreen should be a very important part of your preparation when wearing a tank top.
at one point, there was a great blue heron flying under the trees above the creek bed while i pedaled down the parallel path for at least 200 yards (meters, whatever). that would have easily been the highlight of my day until, as you may have heard, we had an earthquake. Colorado also had an earthquake last night, but i didn't feel that one. the thought progression as the windows began to rattle was a funny one:
why is that helicopter flying so low to the ground again?
why are so many helicopters flying so low to the ground?
there is no helicopter. the entire house is moving.
oh dear god, what exploded in DC?
wait, no ... earthquake? really? do i go downstairs? do i go outside?
right, doorway ... oh, it's done.
fortunately, there seems to be little damage and harm for all the news coverage. i learned a little more about earthquakes and the old crust we have out here, and that heron flying alongside me was probably still the most amazing part of the day.

Interesting earthquake experience! During the last earthquake we had I didn't feel a thing, though James thought I was jumping on the bed to wake him up. I didn't learn about it until I heard the news driving to school.
looks like a beautiful day for earthquakes, erm, i mean, a bike ride!
