tips, tricks and general advice

so there's this:
and then there's me. with some questions for you.
1. the gym. the firm at which i'm temping has graciously allowed me (read: i signed a waiver) to use the gym facilities in the building. honestly, i do think it was nice of them to let me have access. the gym itself is quite nice, with 4 treadmills, 2 things i presume are ellipticals, some recumbent bikes, weight equipment, free weights, pilates balls, showers, lockers, etc. other than the one night it took me four tries and what seemed like an eternity to open the locker with my stuff in it, i'd say it's gone well. but here's my question: i simply don't have time to shower, nor do i want to schlep more clothes than absolutely necessary with me. what's the best way not to offend my fellow metro riders on the train home? also, gym bags? where do the smelly clothes go while I tote my work clothes home safely? why is this so confusing?
2. music ideas. right now, i have a shorter playlist that includes things like Kim Wilde's Kids in America, Adele's Rolling in the Deep, Elastica's Stutter, Hole's Violet, some Go-Gos and Sugarcubes... but i could use some variety. there's plenty to choose from here, but what do you like to listen to while running?
3. speed. i'm pretty much convinced i cannot run faster than mach tortoise speed. after six months of mostly regular efforts, i can run 3-5 miles at about a slow 11:15-11:30 pace without too much trouble. of course, my breathing starts to go about 30 seconds into the run. i think i'd have to just be walking in order to maintain a conversation while moving. i'm not panting, but i can't converse. hmm. how's that for descriptive? also, i'm thinking i need to add intervals or tempo runs or hill training or something to work on speed issues, but i don't actually have any idea what i'm talking about here. why is this so confusing?
4. 8k. why didn't i put 8k on my 42 list? it says 5k under 30, 10k and half. clearly this was an oversight on my part. they are timing the 5k split for the St. Patty's race, but i don't think it will be under 30, knowing i have 3k left after that.
there you have it. if anyone wants to sponsor me with one of those fancy-schmancy tech shirts for running in, like these, well... i have an idea for a design.

1. so what will you wear home? the gym clothes or put the work clothes back on? i always shower at the gym because i know i will be too tired or busy by the time i get home.
2. i also only jog/run without music. at the gym i watch cooking or home improvement shows with no sound. i think i am weird that way, but it reminds me of the silence of swimming. just you and your body going and going and going...
3. and again i am no help. do you use the incline function? i start off at 1 or 2 and increase to 3 at the most. then at the end when i am sure i have no energy left, i start lowering it and it is like a second wind.
also, i can not converse most of the time when i jog. but i do notice that i am not out of breath necessarily at the end. but my face is usually bright red.
okay, i am not good with the exercise hints (especially since i just started going back to the gym last week after realizing that none of my clothes fit and squeezing them on is probably not a good idea.)
go 8k!

1. I have a gym bag that has a "wet" clothes compartment. It was a little more expensive (it's from REI) but you can usually find them in the swim department of most sports stores.
2. I hardly listen to music. Luckily at the gym here the cardio equipment has individual tvs with headphone jacks. I got to watch pretty and pink today. But I do like pop music with a good beat when I do listen to music. It's not usually what I listen to, but I ten to run faster with the faster music.
3. I have no idea what tips to give you except interval training (sprinting hard for short period of time, walking, sprinting, etc.) helped me go past the usual 3 miles. Once I did the intervals a couple of times, I found it easy to maintain a steady jog pace for longer distances. I hardly use the incline and just hope to find flat races. And also, my face is always red, dripping with sweat, and I can not talk once I hit a about a 10 min mile pace.

And a side note, if ticket prices drop, maybe I can wear my st patty gear for an 8k!

1. I would just go home in gym clothes. I like to think I'm not that smelly, but I may be delusional.
2. I only run with other people so I just talk. No help there.
3. That speed sounds good to me. I hear intervals are good for speed. I have tried (okay once) this at the track where you sprint the straightaway, walk 1/2 the curve, jog the next 1/2, and then sprint again, keep repeating for 4 laps.
4. I will sponsor you! I might need a shirt too. :)
